Choosing Paint Colors? Don’t Make These 7 Common Mistakes
April 21, 2025
Choosing the perfect paint color for your home can be surprisingly tricky. With so many shades to choose from, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed — and even easier to make a choice you regret later. That’s why we’ve created a simple checklist to help you confidently pick the right color and bring your vision to life. Before you commit, be sure to avoid these 7 common paint color mistakes that can completely throw off the look and feel of your space.1. Choosing a color from a tiny swatch. What looks perfect on a 2x2 chip can feel totally different on a whole wall. Always test a sample on the actual wall — and in a few spots in different light! Let is dry and leave it up for a few days to let it sink in to see if you love it or hate it.2. Don't ignore lighting.Natural light, warm bulbs, cool LEDs — they all change how a color looks. Even the way the light shines in from outside can make a color look different. What glows in the showroom might feel flat at home. 3. Forgetting to consider the whole house.Your rooms don’t have to match, but they should flow. Clashing colors from room to room can feel jarring. Try to find colors that mesh well like warm creams and whites that go with pretty much everything the color wheel has to offer.4. Going too trendy.Terracotta might be everywhere this year, but will you still love it this next lap around the sun? Choose colors you actually enjoy living with, not something you have to change each year because you're already bored with it.5. Picking a color that’s too bold or too bland.Bold is fun—really fun, but an entire room in bright teal? Might be too much. Speaking from experience, I did that as a kid. Never slept a single day of my life in that room. It was the complete opposite of calming. On the flip side, too many neutrals can leave a space feeling blah. So make sure to find a good balance.6. Forgetting undertones. That "gray" might have a sneaky purple or green undertone. Compare it to other grays to really see what’s going on. You'll pat yourself on the back for that one. I promise. 7. Not testing it with furniture and finishes.A perfect wall color can look off if it clashes with your floors, cabinets, or couch. Make sure everything in your space flows together nicely by making sure the colors compliment each other, not clash with each other. If all fails, just ask our super amazing and friendly Design Consultants - Amy or Johnna by visiting us at capitalhomes.com.

What Our
Homebuyers Are Saying
"The ease of not having to take care of hardly anything has been wonderful. A new home, a retirement community and peace of mind knowing we had a community of folks just like us sounded like a little slice of heaven. It has been 3 years now and we are settled into our daily routine. Giggling on our front porch, cooking our favorite foods, putting together puzzles and enjoying the simple things in life."
