What is a Scandinavian kitchen and why do we love it!
September 7, 2023
We've noticed, in our design center, that more and more people are requesting a Scandinavian-designed home (especially kitchens!) This might make you say, "What exactly is a Scandinavian design and where did it come from?" The look itself is very light, bright, and airy, and mimics the Nordic love of the outdoors by incorporating natural tones, lots of greenery and plants, and more earthy textures. When it comes to kitchens, this style is both incredibly functional and beautiful. When choosing to build a home in the Tulsa Metro Area, Capital Homes is ready to help bring your design dreams to life. Let's talk through a few distinct features and see why this look is taking the world by storm.
Neutral and Light Color Palettes: An absolute must for this style of design, the color scheme largely revolves around soft neutrals like whites, grays, and beiges. These shades not only amplify the natural light but also create a very natural and serene ambiance. Accents in black or deep blue add just enough contrast without overwhelming the space. By adding the pops of color it also provides a little warmth and personality.
Wood Elements: Wood, particularly light woods like pine, oak, or even ash, plays a dominant role in Scandinavian kitchens. Whether it's the flooring, cabinets, beams, or dining tables, the presence of wood adds warmth and natural texture against the neutral backdrop.
Minimalism at its Finest: In a Scandinavian-style kitchen, you always try to remove all unnecessary clutter. The design is built on the idea that everything in your home should have a purpose and place. Drop zones are a popular choice amongst our homeowners, allowing them to display essential items, ensuring that everything is within reach, and allowing an emphasis on the people in the space vs. the things. This is where we all need to channel our inner Kon Mari who took the world by storm a few years ago with her incredible organizing tips and of course, her folding technique for clothes!
Appliances: While the interior design is very simple, it doesn't compromise on functionality. Most Scandinavian kitchens have advanced, integrated appliances that seamlessly blend into the design. This ensures that the space is usable.
Have fun with Greenery: Bringing nature indoors is a very important Scandinavian trait and also something Capital Homes absolutely agrees with. Adding a few fresh potted plants to the counter, or some fresh herbs in the window sill can make all the difference, adding vibrancy to the kitchen and a little bit of a natural texture mix. It really pops next to the neutral undertones.
Functional Lighting: In a region where daylight can be scarce during winter, efficient lighting is important. Pendant lights over dining areas and strategically placed lamps ensure that the kitchen is always well-lit, regardless of the time of day. Did you know that soft lighting can also have a very calming effect?
Quality Over Quantity: Investing in a few high-quality items rather than overcrowding the space is a fundamental aspect of the Nordic design. This is the perfect chance to highlight your favorite antique piece, we all have them and all love them.
Inclusive Spaces: Scandinavian kitchens often blend with dining or living areas, endorsing the idea of an open-concept design. This seamless transition makes the kitchen become an integral part of life, not just for cooking. A kitchen is for making memories! If you haven't seen our new Augusta floorplan, click here and fall in love with the kitchen island that is designed with this in mind.
At Capital Homes, we love the popularity of this design and incorporated it into many of our floorplans. It brings the perfect blend of elegance, simplicity, and functionality. It's about creating a space that serves its purpose while simultaneously offering tranquility and relaxation. If you're considering a kitchen makeover, this Nordic-inspired approach might be the fresh start you're seeking. Give us a call or visit our design gallery to see the beautiful kitchens we offer, it might also be our favorite room.
